1) Welcome in Spring at Tivoli Gardens

Copenhagen's most popular landmark, Tivoli Gardens, opens for the Spring season on March 22, 2024. Tivoli Gardens is the world’s second-oldest amusement park, opened in 1843. 

It is the most visited amusement park in Scandinavia and with good reason. Located in the city center, it is compact and cozy, but big on rides. The atmosphere is both calming and vibrant.

With dozens of rides, restaurants, concerts, and other kinds of entertainment, Tivoli Gardens is a must-visit any time of the year.

You can go at night for a sparkling environment as the Gardens are decorated with colored lamps and hundreds of thousands of small lights.

2) Copenhagen Sakura Festival

You know it is April when Cherry Blossoms bloom around the world. Copenhagen has its own annual Sakura Festival and it is free to attend! 

In 2024, it takes place on April 20 & 21, in Langelinie Park (map). In addition to seeing more than 100 Cherry Blossom trees blooming, you can enjoy live performances of Japanese traditional music.

 

There will be drum shows, folk dance, and even a martial arts demonstration. This is a very family-friendly activity so if you are traveling with kids set aside some time to go to the festival.

3) Celebrate Queen Margrethe II's Birthday

Every April 16, Denmark celebrates the Queen's birthday and Copenhagen is decked out with flags in honor of their beloved Queen.

If you are in Copenhagen that day, head to Amalienborg Palace, where crowds gather to catch a glimpse of the Queen when she appears on her balcony.

To get closer to Danish royalty, you can go to Amalienborg Palace and watch the Changing of the Guards every day at noon.

4) Visit the Open Air Museum (Frilandsmuseet)

On April 2, 2024, this unique museum opens for the season. The museum is a living reenactment of Denmark's rural history.

You can visit the homes of people from eras past - like the village weaver or millner. Interact with peasants and even inmates of the poorhouse!

The Museum is 30 minutes from the city but easy to reach. See the Open Air Museum website for information.

The museum's seasonal hours:

  • April 2 - June 28th from 10 am - 4 pm, Tue-Sun
  • June 29 - August 4 from 10 am - 5 pm, Everyday
  • August 6 - October 11 from 10 am - 4 pm, Tue-Sun
  • October 12 - October 20 from 10 am - 5 pm, Everyday
  • October 21 - November 29 from 10 am - 4 pm, Sat-Sun
  • November 30 - December 22, Sat-Sun

Admission varies by season. In low season, Adult ticket cost 115 DKK and in high season it costs 140 DKK. Children under 18 are free.

Note that entrance to the Open Air Museum is free for holders of the Copenhagen Card, one of Copenhagen's tourist passes


5) Save Money With a Tourist Pass

If you’re planning to visit multiple attractions or take more than one tour while visiting Copenhagen, chances are you’ll save a lot of money using one of the tourist discount passes available in the city.

6) Experience Copenhagen from the Water

In April, the weather in Copenhagen is suitable for a cruise or boat ride along the city's scenic canals. During a one-hour cruise along a canal, you can sit back and enjoy the sights. 

You'll pass by many of the city’s most famous landmarks, like the palaces of Christiansborg and Amalienborg and the Little Mermaid statue. 
 

The tour departs from Ved Stranden or Nyhavn, you choose. Audio commentary is provided in English and Danish (and upon request German, Spanish and Italian).

There is a variety of cruises and boat rides in Copenhagen. Keep in mind that some Copenhagen tourist passes include a free boat ride or tour.


7) Copenhagen International Salsa Festival

One doesn't automatically think of salsa dancing when visiting Copenhagen. But from May 10-12, 2024, you can learn how to do the Mambo, Cha Cha, Bachata, Boogaloo and of course how to Salsa!

During the 3-day Copenhagen Salsa Festival, more than 50 dance workshops are held as well as many other activities and parties.

There will be performances by some of the best artists of this genre that are known worldwide. You can attend dance parties on 3 different floors each with international DJs.

8) Take a Free Walking Tour

Free walking tours are also known as pay-what-you-like tours.  Rather than paying for a tour ticket upfront, you get to decide after the tour what the experience was worth to you, and if you choose to, tip your guide accordingly.

Because these tours are so budget-friendly, they are quite popular and the group size for your tour can be quite large. 

If you prefer a small group or to endure close interaction with your guide to ask questions, for example, we recommend paid small group tours. You can find small group walking tours of Copenhagen for as little as € 16.

 
If you are looking for a convenient way to move from attraction to attraction, consider a hop-on-hop-off bus tour through Copenhagen. 

You will see the sights, hear guided commentary and cover more ground than you would while walking between destinations!


9) See the Hilarious Ricky Gervais

Note: Not happening in 2024

Ricky Gervais, the British comedian, who was the start of the U.K. version of The Office will perform at the Royal Arena.

He’s known for his offensive jokes, so his show is generally for attendees 18 and up. Find tickets here


10) Copenhagen Games 2024

This wildly popular annual gaming and e-sports festival takes place in the month of April. 2024 dates is yet to be decided.

This festival is for both professional e-sport players and casual gamers and attracts over 10,000 guests over four days.

For fans of Overwatch, Minecraft, Fortnite, League of Legends and more, this event is for you!

Tournaments you can participate in this year include CS:GO, CS:GO Ladies, Team Fortress 2, EDU Cup, FIFA, Magic: The Gathering Arena and more.

11) See a Concert 

Beginning in April, Tivoli Gardens (see above) hosts concerts on Friday nights at a series known as Fredagsrock.
