The Weather in Prague in December

This post provides information about what kind of weather you can expect in Prague throughout December.

Prague this month is cold and cloudy, but somewhat dry.

As a retired meteorologist turned tour guide, I didn't expect that I would use my experience as a forecaster in my new career in tourism.

But here I am, finding myself answering more weather questions as a blogger than I ever did as a weatherman.

So, here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the weather in Prague in December.


How Cold Is Prague in December?

Daytime high temperatures in Prague early in December tend to be around 4 C (about 39 F) but fall to about 2 C (about 36 F) near the end of the month. 

A few of the warmer days, early in December, can reach up to near 10 C (50 F). 

The record high temperature during December is 19 C (66.2 F).

Late night and early morning low temperatures are quite cold, averaging near 0 C (32 F) early in the month falling to about -3 C (27 F) near the end of the month. 

A few of the colder mornings, especially late in the month, can dip down to -10 C (14 F). 

You should expect about 23 days this month with minimum temperatures dipping down to 0 C or below. 

The record low temperature in Prague during December is a bone-chilling -20 C (-4 F).

Clouds and Rain

December will see about 11-12 days with clear or at least partly sunny skies.

Precipitation during December is light, totaling only about 25 mm (about 1 inch), and can often fall in the form of snow.

You should expect about 5-6 days with at least 1 mm (0.04 inches) of precipitation. 

Snow varies greatly from year to year, however, on average, about 6-7 days will have some snow on the ground. 


Amount of Daylight 

Daylight hours decreased from about 8.4 hours on December 1st to just over 8 hours on the 21st before starting to increase slowly again.  


Windspeeds

The wind tends to be mostly gentle (12-19 kph/8-12 mph) but will occasionally be moderate (20-28 kph/13-18mph).


Does It Snow in Prague in December?

Precipitation during December is light, but can often fall in the form of snow.  

December is a dry month so total snowfalls generally will be 3-4 cm (1.2-1.6 inches) and rarely exceed 10 cm (4 inches). 

December snowfall varies greatly from year to year, however, on average, about 6-7 days will have some snow on the ground.


What to Wear in Prague in December

During December you should pack a few sweaters and a warm coat.

Warm shoes or boots and a thick pair of socks will also come in handy when exploring Prague on foot. 

Also, consider a pair of gloves and a scarf and don’t forget a good pair of walking shoes as well. 


What to Do in Prague in December

If you're willing to brave the colder weather, there's almost never a bad time to take a free walking tour in Prague.

You may also want to head to the Petrin Tower during a snowy day to enjoy incredible views of the city blanketed in snow.

There are also a lot of great Holiday Markets selling all kinds of different gifts and festive treats. These markets are usually pretty close to ice rinks, and there's no better time to enjoy some ice skating!

Alternatively, you could also escape the winter cold by going to see the annual production of The Nutcracker at Hybernia Theatre.

There are also usually at least a few holiday concerts to attend.
