WHAT IS THE LONDON TRANSPORT MUSEUM?

London’s transport system has developed quite a bit over the past few centuries, and this museum covers a lot of its history.

Discover how the streets of London went from catering to horse and buggy to cars, double-decker buses and more.

With over 450,000 items in their collection, this museum offers a rather extensive look at how transportation has changed over the years.

In addition to all the artifacts of the past, there are also several exhibits covering modern-day developments in transportation.

The London Transport Museum is located in the Flower Market building in Covent Garden. The museum is open every day from 10 am - 18:00 (6 pm).

This location offers a free cloakroom for visitors where you can store your coats and bags. That said, if you have any large items, you may want to consider another London luggage storage option.

DISCOUNTS

There are several different ways to get a discount on London Transport Museum tickets.

This section will provide details about tourist passes, combo packages and other opportunities to save money on admission to the museum.

Tourist Discount Passes

If you’re planning to visit more than just one attraction while in London, you may want to consider getting a tourist pass to save some money off general admission prices.

The London Transport Museum is currently only included for free with the London Pass, which is an all-inclusive service.

What this means is that you’ll pay one flat price for access to dozens of attractions over the course of a specific amount of time (1, 2, 3, 6, or 10 consecutive days).

The more activities and locations you visit, the more money you’ll end up saving on everything. There are also additional discounts at popular locations such as M&M’s World and The Beatles Store.

Here are a few of the best attractions and tours included with the London Pass:

  • Hop-on-Hop-off Bus Tour
  • London Bridge Experience
  • Thames River Cruise
  • View From the Shard
  • Westminster Abbey
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral
  • Wimbledon Tour
  • Tower of London
  • Windsor Castle
  • And more!

Depending on how you use the London Pass, you could save anywhere from 10% - 50% off general admission prices, but you’ll have to use it for at least 4-5 attractions per day before you start to save a lot of money.

For more details, please read our post covering London tourist passes.

NOTE: If you use the London Pass for admission to the London Transport Museum, your ticket will not be valid for a full year. In order to get a ticket valid for 12 months, you must purchase your tickets individually.

Combo Packages

There are a variety of ticket packages available which include admission to the London Transport Museum. These deals combine tickets for the museum with another attraction or activity.

Underground Walking Tour + London Transport Museum

London Zoo + London Transport Museum

Londres Transport Museum + Covent Garden Walking Tour

Westminster Walking Tour + London Transport Museum

South Bank Walking Tour + London Transport Museum

While some of these ticket packages are a great deal, others aren’t as good as they might seem.

For instance, if you wanted to see the Tower of London and take a hop on hop off bus tour in addition to visiting this museum, you could actually save more money with the London Pass – which includes all three activities!

2 For 1 Ticket

If you plan on using London’s National Rail to get around the city, you can take advantage of their 2 for 1 program and get two tickets to the London Transport Museum for the price of one!

In order to get this deal, you'll have to buy National Rail tickets to travel to the London Transport Museum. You'll also need a voucher that you can get on the Days Out Guide for free.

For more details about this service and how to use it, please read our post about London 2 for 1 deals.

Kids Go Free!

Anyone under the age of 17 will be granted free admission to the London Transport Museum when accompanied by an adult guardian.

This is important to keep in mind when you’re looking at combo packages and tourist passes, as you might not even have to pick up a pass or package for your young ones.

Military Discount

If you are a current or former member of the British Military, you will be given a 20% discount off general admission at the London Transport Museum.

This discount applies to both veterans and active-duty military.

Local Residents Discount

If you live in the following areas, you're eligible for a discounted rate of just £15 per ticket.

  • Westminster
  • Kings Cross
  • Bloomsbury
  • Waterloo
  • Holborn
  • Vauxhall
  • Borough
  • Bermondsey
  • Elephant
  • Castle

All you have to do is provide proof of your residency via identification.

Off-Peak Ticket Discount

The London Transport Museum offers an Off-Peak ticket option for £18.50. This ticket is only valid after 2 pm on weekdays.

Considering that the regular ticket is only £2.50 more and it's valid from open to close every day, this definitely isn't the best discount available on our list.

Group Discount

The London Transport Museum also has a group rate of £18.50 per person. In addition to this rate, groups of 10 or more receive an extra 10% off per ticket.

Discount Sites

Every now and then a service such as Groupon will provide discounted admission to locations such as the London Transport Museum and/or combo packages which include tickets to this attraction.

In addition to any discounts you’ll receive just for using their service, they also frequently provide additional coupon codes for 10% - 25% off local activities.

Before checking out, make sure to look at the top and bottom of their main page for any banners which may include coupons that you can use to save even more money!

EXHIBITS AND ATTRACTIONS

With over 400,000 artifacts in their collection, there is plenty to see at the London Transport Museum.

That said, some items are a little more notable than others, and this section will provide details about the best exhibits & attractions available.

Hidden London

This exhibit will take you into an abandoned tube station to give you a sense of what the London Underground once looked like.

In addition to the accurate re-creation of a tube station, you will also have a chance to see several archive photos, artifacts, vintage posters, diagrams, decorative tiles and more.

Poster Parade

The London Transport Museum has a collection of over 5,000 posters that were used as an advertisement for the London Underground.

These posters represent over 100 years of artwork and several different art styles.

This exhibit changes every 3 months, ensuring that you’ll probably see brand new posters each time you visit – more of a reason to take advantage of their annual ticket program!

Untangling the Tracks

Ever wondered how they figure out where to place tube stations and program schedules for each line? This exhibit covers the subject with a variety of historic artifacts.

Visitors can expect to see miniature models of new central London stations, solve a signal puzzle to help divert trains and experiment with a real train model.

Historic Vehicles

There are a lot of vehicles on display at the London Transport Museum, including horse-drawn carriages, subway trains, bicycles, cars, double-decker buses, trams and more.

The best part is that visitors are allowed to jump aboard most of these vehicles and take a look around!

Ticket Collection

The design and style of tickets have changed quite a bit over the years, and the London Transport Museum has thousands of examples from throughout the last century.

If you want to see what tickets looked like back in the 1800s and see how things were altered over the years, there is plenty to see at this museum.
