Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands which is dedicated to Dutch arts and history.

The museum tells 800 years of Dutch history from the 13th century till now. 

It also houses the Rijksmuseum Research Library which is the largest public art research library in the Netherlands.

Some of the notable arts of this museum include The Night Watch (1642) by Rembrandt, Girl in a Blue Dress (1641) by Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck, Shivaji's portrait (1680s) and The Threatened Swan (c. 1650) by Jan Asselijn.

Moco Museum

The Moco Museum is an independent museum dedicated to the display of modern, contemporary and street art collections. 

This museum has one more branch situated in Barcelona, Spain.

The museum was established with the goals of bringing younger, larger audiences and opening up art to the general public.

Stedelijk Museum

Located at the Museum Square in the Amsterdam South borough, Stedelijk is a museum for modern art, contemporary art, and design. 

The collection features modern and contemporary art collectibles from the early 20th century up to the 21st century. 

The Stedelijk collection is divided into various categories like painting, sculpture, posters, photography, industrial design, artist books, and so on.

Cobra Museum of Modern Art

It is an art museum located in the Amstelveen area of the Netherlands. 

The exhibits consist of key works by artists associated with three art movements, Vrij Beelden (1945), Cobra (1948–1951), and Creatie (1950–1955).

Also, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions by new and experimental artists of national and international origin.

Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum is a Dutch art museum that primarily focuses on the works of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries.

With 200 paintings, 400 drawings, and 700 letters in the museum,  it is the largest Van Gogh collection in the world.

Some of the notable works displayed in the museum include The Potato Eaters, Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette, Wheat Field with a Lark, Almond Blossoms, and so on.

Huis Marseille

It is a photography museum and also the first one of its kind in the Netherlands.

The museum got its name from the building in which it is housed and the residence was built around 1665 for French merchant Issac Focquier.

Currently, the museum has 14 exhibition spaces and it also has a photography library and a garden house.

Eye Film Museum

It is a film archive, museum, and cinema that preserves and presents both Dutch and foreign films screened in the Netherlands.

The museum manages 54,000  films from all types of genres.

This museum is also engaged in the restorations of previously lost films like Beyond the Rocks (1922), The Seashell and the Clergyman (1928), and Shoes (1916).

They also have an exhibition space, a shop, a floor for educational activities, and a bar-restaurant for visitors.

Rembrandt House Museum

It is a museum located in a former house in the Jodenbreestraat, which was built in the year 1606.

The museum got its name from its former owner, a well-known Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, who occupied the house between 1639 and 1658.

The museum has a large collection of not only paintings and drawings, but also features all of Rembrandt's etchings collection.

STRAAT

NDSM

Named after the company Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, It was a former shipyard which is used to build and repair ships by the docks.

It now serves as a huge cultural hotspot with a variety of bars and restaurants.

It hosts a variety of events like festivals, performances, dance parties, exhibitions, and some other cultural events in a post-industrial environment.


W139

W139 is a venue for the production and display of modern art. 

It was founded in the year 1979 by five young artists who wanted to start a movement against the closed world of commercial arts and museum spaces.

The museum gives artists the time and space for unrestricted experiments in the center of Amsterdam.


De Appel

Founded in 1975, It is a contemporary art center.

The primary activities of De Appel include exhibitions, publications, and discourse events.

Tropenmuseum

Founded in 1864, the Tropenmuseum is an ethnographic museum located in Amsterdam.

The museum, one of the biggest in Amsterdam, houses eight permanent exhibitions as well as a steady stream of temporary exhibitions featuring both contemporary and classic visual arts and photographic works.

Each exhibit tells a human story and embodies a universal theme such as celebration, mourning, decoration, prayer, love, and conflict.

Museum Van Loon

Named after the Van Loon family who lived in the house from the 19th century, Museum Van Loon is located in a canalside house in Amsterdam.

The lives of former house staff can also be witnessed by the original uniforms, kitchen objects, and utensils kept in the basement of this house.

Amsterdam Museum Schuttersgalerij

It is a freely accessible museum that showcases 15 colossal portraits of the Civic guards from the 17th century.

Gallery is located in a passageway between the Kalverstraat and the Begijnhof.

The portraits showcase the rich city residents who used to be a part of the Civic Guard and would spend their free time on a shooting range honing their musket shooting skills.


Open Space Contemporary Art Museum

Open Space Contemporary Art Museum, commonly known as OSCAM, is a museum for art, fashion, design, craftsmanship, and innovation.

Architecture Center Amsterdam

Founded in 1986, this center focuses on architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture.

It is a photography museum located in the  Keizersgracht area of Amsterdam.

Hermitage Amsterdam

The Hermitage Amsterdam is a satellite museum of the Hermitage Museum located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. 

The museum has two permanent exhibits, one explores the relationship between the Netherlands and Russia, and the other explores the development of the Amstelhof structure. 

Temporary exhibitions typically last six months.

Science & Technology Museums

Although there aren’t as many science and technology museums in Amsterdam, there is at least one major location you’ll probably want to visit, and a few others that may pique your interest. 


NEMO Science Museum

It is a science center located in the Oosterdokseiland neighborhood in the Amsterdam-Centrum borough.

The museum has more than 19000 artifacts showcasing the relationship between humankind and energy.

Their collection is divided into four categories. These categories are Lighting, Electrical Engineering, Energy Generation and Storage, and Technology at Home.

Computer Museum in Amsterdam

This museum is dedicated exclusively to computers and was established in 1991 at the University of Amsterdam.

The Computer Museum shows how computer technology has advanced and been used from World War II to the present. Most of the machines are in working condition.

The collection comprises slide rules, table books, and mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic calculators to demonstrate how scientific computing was done before the invention of computers.


Micropia Museum

Micropia is one of its kind museum that showcases the world of microorganisms.

The museum spreads knowledge about microorganisms, which, despite playing a crucial role in how humans live their daily lives, are frequently linked to illness and disease.

Amsterdam is a very old city with a rich and sometimes troubling history.

Amsterdam Museum

Founded in 1926, the museum welcomes all the residents and tourists to become co-owners of the city.

The art and heritage collection of this museum houses more than 100,000 objects.

Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House is a museum and writer's residence honoring her memory.

It maintains the hiding location, has a permanent display of Anne Frank's life and times, and offers a room for exhibitions on all types of prejudice and persecution.

The museum has the original red-checked diary of Anne Frank which she received on her 13th birthday.

Jewish Museum

Jewish Museum is a museum devoted to Jewish history, culture, and religion both in the Netherlands and around the world.

This museum is a part of the Jewish Cultural Quarter. It is also the only museum in the city dedicated to Jewish history.

The museum collection includes 11,000 art objects and historical objects and only 5 percent of objects are on display at one time.

Our Lord in the Attic Museum

Located in the heart of Amsterdam, it is a canal house, house church, and museum from the 17th century.

The Catholic Church was built on the top three floors of the canal house during the 1660s.

It houses the front room, the between room, the hall, the church, the Lady Chapel, the confessional, the Jaap Leeuwenberg hall, and the 17th-century kitchen.

The collection tells the story of Amsterdam’s 750 years of Catholic history.


Amsterdam City Archives

The Amsterdam City Archives is a repository for records relating to the city's past and serves as a source of knowledge.

With a total shelf length of 50 km, it is the largest municipal archive in the world.

Temporary exhibits are frequently held in the Archives, while the Amsterdam Treasure Room houses important documents that are on permanent display.


Allard Pierson Museum of Antiques

It is an archaeological museum located at the University of Amsterdam.

Exhibits include artifacts from the ancient civilizations of Egypt, the Near East, the Greek, Etruria, and the Roman Empire.

Art objects and utensils from 4000 BC to 500 AD are showcased in this museum.

The Ancient Egypt exhibition has mummies, and sarcophagi, and it also runs a film showcasing the process of mummification.

National Maritime Museum

The museum is dedicated to maritime history and numerous artifacts associated with shipping and sailing are housed in the museum.

Paintings, scale models, weapons, and world maps can be found in the collection.

The paintings show historical sea battles and Dutch naval figures like Michiel de Ruyter. 

Works of 17th-century cartographer Willem Blaeu and his son Joan Blaeu are represented in the map collection.


Royal Palace Amsterdam

It is one of the three palaces in the Netherlands which can be used by the monarch by the act of parliament.

It was originally built as a city hall during the 17th century.

The Citizen's Hall and marble galleries at the center of the structure still reflect the magnificence of the Golden Age.

This museum is located on the Herengracht in Amsterdam.

The museum was originally a house built around 1685 for Jacob Hop, mayor of Amsterdam.

The room also contains a number of ornamental paintings by Jacob de Wit which were acquired from other houses in Amsterdam.


Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam

The Dutch Resistance Museum tells the story of the Dutch people in World War II.

The museum showcases the life of Dutch people during the reign of Nazi Germany over the Netherlands from 14 May 1940 to 5 May 1945.

The museum's ongoing displays replicate the feel of Amsterdam's streets during the German occupation of the city during World War II. 

Large images, vintage posters, items, movies, and sounds from that horrible era aid in recreating the scene. Visitors also get to see a visual representation of the Holocaust's history.

Jewish Cultural Quarter/Holocaust Memorial

This theater was used during the Second World War by the German occupiers as a detention center for Jews who had been ordered to report for transportation. 

From here, tens of thousands of men, women, and kids were sent to concentration camps.

After the war, it was transformed into a place of remembrance and reflection. 


Electric Tram Museum Amsterdam

Established in 1975, this museum on rails was the idea of a group of fanatics who restored old electric trams from the beginning of the 20th century to run on a separate tram line from Amsterdam to Amstelveen.

Today, historic trains from several cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Groningen, Utrecht, Vienna, Graz, and Prague are on display at the Electric Tram Line Museum. 

Most of the trains are over 70 years old, and all of the historical signs and their original colors are preserved.


The New Church

The New Church is a 15th-century church located on Dam Square, next to the Royal Palace

It now serves as an exhibition venue rather than a place of worship.

The church was damaged by the city fires of 1421 and 1452, and it almost completely burned down in 1645. It was then reconstructed in the Gothic style.

In addition to the church's stained-glass windows, visitors can view the ornate altar, arched nave, large pipe organ, sepulchral monuments, and the tomb of the highly regarded Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1607–1676).


The Old Church

This historic location has the honor of being the oldest building in the city of Amsterdam.

The largest medieval wooden vault in Europe is found in the Old church ceiling. 

The oak planks from Estonia, which date back to 1390, have some of the greatest acoustics in all of Europe.

It now serves as a hub for modern art and history.

Cromhout House

It is a series of canal houses located on the Herengracht in Amsterdam.

The houses were designed by the Dutch architect Philips Vingboons in the style of Dutch Classicism.

The house got its name from its previous owner Jacob Cromhout.

The buildings have been protected as state monuments since 1970 and it also houses the Biblical Museum since 1975.


Amsterdam Dungeon

It is a horror theater show which brings to life 500 years of Dutch dark history.

The majority of the performance takes place in nearly total darkness, while historical events like medieval torture, the plague, Rembrandt's studio with human corpse vivisection, or a voyage on a Dutch Far East Company sailing ship are depicted with only a few dusty props.

ARTIS Zoo and botanical garden is located in the middle of Amsterdam. This location holds the title of the oldest zoo in the Netherlands.

GASSAN Diamonds is located in a beautifully restored diamond factory that was originally run by steam and was built in 1879. 

Visitors can take tours where they can see the diamond polishers at their work, while multilingual guides explain where diamonds are mined and how rough diamonds turn into dazzling stones.


Diamond Museum

It is a museum located in the Museumplein area of Amsterdam. 

The Diamond Museum display enlightens the visitor on the geological formation of diamonds, the history of the human fascination with diamonds, and how diamonds became not only a symbol of wealth but also of beauty and power.
