CANDEN | Manager & Tour Guide

She has written for HuffPost Travel and has been featured in the Washington Post, WTOP, and numerous other DC papers. She's also been interviewed by the BBC, NPR, Travel Channel and Discovery Family Channel.

Canden is the producer of the podcast, Tour Guide Tell All.

With a M.A. in History from University College London and a B.A. in History from Elon University, she is an authority on D.C. history, and has led tours in the city for over 10 years. She currently resides in DC, but has also lived in London and South Korea, and has travelled to over 28 countries and every US State but Hawaii.

She homeschools her 2 children by exploring the plethora of museums in DC.

DAN | Tour Guide & Weather Expert

Dan grew up minutes away from important Civil War battlefields like Antietam and Harpers Ferry, fostering in him a lifelong love of American history.  He took that love to Dartmouth College and graduated with a degree in History and Moral Philosophy.  He then went on down to Georgia, where he taught high school US History.  He decided he needed to move a bit closer to home, settled in DC in 2005, and soon started teaching history, civics, and journalism at a local school.

He then took on a position at a national civics education organization, helping teachers from all over the country use the sites and resources of Washington, DC in their classrooms back home.  When he isn’t rooting for the Washington Nationals (he lives 2 blocks from the stadium!), he’s usually exploring the many awesome food options in the city, perfecting his “low and slow” brisket, or coming up with new and creative things to dip in batter and deep fry.

ANDY | Tour Guide

Andy is a native Washingtonian, whose family always seemed to be showing off the town to someone. His earliest memories of being at Washington National Cathedral are from the age of two, and he was completely fascinated by the place by the age of ten; at which time he also became the go-to cathedral guide for family and visitors.

In September of 2000, Andy became a Washington National Cathedral docent, and, in more recent years, he authored the book, Building Washington National Cathedral. Throw in a background in theater and acting, and Andy’s ability to tell a story dovetails wonderfully with his extensive knowledge of the art, architecture, and history of Washington National Cathedral.

GEORGIA | Tour Guide

Growing up in Minneapolis, Georgia never imagined she'd end up in the nation's capital. After leading tours for the University of Minnesota (Ski-U-Mah!) an opportunity with the Department of the Interior led her first to Alaska and then to DC.

She fell in love with the District, its neighborhoods, and its history. Georgia spends her days managing a boathouse on the Potomac and her evenings subjecting tour guests to the corniest jokes she can make. When she's not working, Georgia enjoys watching old movies, listening to history podcasts, and visiting DC's many museums.

JIM | Tour Guide

Jim is originally from Pennsylvania and has lived in Alexandria, VA for four years.  He has been in the environmental education field for his whole career and lived in NY, CA, and MD.  Jim has always had a strong interest in history and tried to learn everything he could about the places he lived in.  He has really enjoyed living in the DC area and discovering all the stories in and around the city.  Being a tour guide has enabled Jim to become even more immersed in these stories as he shares them with others.

My favorite tour to lead is the Ghosts of Georgetown Tour because the stories offer a great combination of good old fashioned spookiness and interesting history that is easily brought to life in such a beautiful setting. Also, who doesn't love the Exorcist Stairs?

KAILEY | Tour Guide

Kailey is originally from Connecticut but moved to DC almost a decade ago after earning her MA in Emergency Management at Pace University. She works in corporate governance by day and gives tours by night (and weekend).

In her spare time, Kailey enjoys trying out new DC restaurants, traveling & taking dark history tours in other cities, running and hanging out with her 18 year old cat, Cat.

MAX | Tour Guide

Why is this native Californian so drawn to DC history? Max fell in love with the stories of the Civil War ever since he made his first visits to the historic battlefields. Max is also enthusiastic about bike camping and has taken his two wheels on the same route where John Wilkes Booth fled after the assassination.

When not delving into the annals of Abraham and abolition, Max leads a political non-profit focused on animal issues.

OUR STORY

One of the most frequently asked questions on our tours is how this all got started.

In the Summer of 2007, Ben and Brody started a small company leading walking tours of the National Mall – filled with humor, history and sometimes magic, these tours were name-your-own-price and allowed guests to pay at the end.

MobileTours, run by Rich, was already running mobile app tours of the National Mall and Arlington National Cemetery, as well as a version of a Lincoln Assassination Tour for segways. Stephen was working with MobileTours to create a walking tour version of Lincoln Assassination and a Ghosts of Georgetown tour. When MobileTours owner Rich, his brother Eddie, and Stephen combined MobileTours with DC by Foot in January 2009, it created an unstoppable force of trivia.

Today, Ben, Brody, and Eddie have moved on to the real world of lawyering and technology start-ups in New York City and Los Angeles. Rich helps run Dubai by Foot.

After a few years in DC, Stephen left for the concrete pastures of New York City, where he started Free Tours by Foot in New York City. With the help of Canden, the company has expanded in new cities and new tours. We now offer tours in Washington DC, Ciudad de Nueva York, Bostón, Filadelfia, Charlestón, Chicago, Nueva Orleans, Londresy Berlín.

DC by Foot has expanded to offer more than fourteen different types of tours – from the National Mall to off the beaten path on U Street. Between all of our DC guides, we have decades of guiding experience, multiple degrees in History, Museum Studies and/or Education, past and current teachers, and a few books on local history published.

If we all ever had the same night off, I think it would be safe to say we’d have the best pub quiz team in the city! But DC by Foot offers tours 365 days of the year – public and private, walking and bus.

We are a company run by guides – and what makes DC by Foot so successful is the intelligence, humor and quirkiness of our guides.

Land Acknowledgment

The DC by Foot & Free Tours by Foot Main Admin team supports the idea of acknowledging all an area's history. In Washington, DC, this land was once the home of the Nacotchtank. You can learn more about their history on our podcast: Tour Guide Tell All.

In addition to acknowledging their history, we choose to honor the Nacotchtank by protecting our land. We are proud to be members of Casey Trees. Our DC guides take the Advocacy in the District to learn to take action to speak for the trees and all guides are paid once a year to participate in a volunteer event with Casey Trees in lieu of leading a tour.
