What is the Temperature like in September?
Early September can be hot and humid in New Orleans, however, as the month progresses somewhat drier and more comfortable weather can often be found here.
The chance of experiencing a muggy day is over 90% early in the month but decreases to about 50% by the end of the month.
Early in September, daytime high temperatures tend to be near 90 F (about 32 C) with a couple of the warmer days reaching into the mid-90s F (about 35 C).
Near the end of this month, however, high temperatures will more likely be in the mid-80s F (28 C-29 C).
About 10 days this month will see high temperatures at or above 90F (32 C) but this about half the number of 90F+ days experienced during August.
The hottest temperature ever recorded in New Orleans during September was 101 F (38.3C).
Late night and early morning low temperatures tend to be in the mid to upper 70s F (about 25 C) early in the month but will more likely be in the lower 70s F (21 C-22 C) near the end of the month.
A few of the cooler mornings during the latter half of the month could even dip down as low as the low to mid-60s F (16 C-17 C).
The record low temperature in New Orleans during September is 42F (5.6C).
CHANCES FOR RAIN AND HURRICANES
During the month of September, New Orleans does see a decrease in cloudiness with about 20-21 days recording either clear or at least partly sunny conditions.
The risk for a rainy day also decreases throughout the month with about 9 days, overall, recording at least 0.01 inches (0.25 mm) of rain.
Daylight averages about 12.6 hours early in the month decreasing to just under 12 hours near the end of the month which is still ample time to explore this great city.
Wind tends to be light to moderate, averaging between 4b mph and 14 mph.
Hurricane Risk
September is the peak of the hurricane season and there is about a 1 in 3 chance for tropical storm wind gusts and a 1 in 10 chance for hurricane-force wind gusts in New Orleans sometime during the season (June through November).
What to Wear in New Orleans in September
It is best to pack clothing that is light and breathable as September continues to be very warm in New Orleans.
Lightweight layers will help you stay dry and seem to be the best for those warm and humid days.
Later in the month, a few mornings can be on the cool side so packing a light sweater or two could come in handy.
Bring your umbrella and a couple of pairs of good walking shoes!
