The Weather in New York in November

This post is about the weather in November in NYC, including tips on what to wear as well as things to do.

The weather is still fairly mild, and there are several great events in the city this month.

As a retired meteorologist turned tour guide, I didn't expect that I would use my experience as a forecaster in my new career in tourism.

But here I am, finding myself answering more weather questions as a blogger than I ever did as a weatherman.

So, here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the weather in NYC in November.


HOW COLD IS NEW YORK IN NOVEMBER?

The weather in New York in November is noted for falling temperatures without the prolonged cold snaps that can occur during the winter months.

Early this month, afternoon high temperatures are still fairly mild; mostly in the upper 50s f to near 60f (about 15C) with overnight lows in the mid-40s f (7-8C).

Towards the end of this month, the daytime high temperatures will have fallen into the upper 40s f to near 50f (9-10 C).

Overnight lows mostly in the mid to upper 30s f (2-3 C).

Expect 3-5 nights this month to see the temperatures dip to 32f (0 C) or less, especially near the end of this month.

On the bright side, you can expect about 18-19 days this month to have sunny or partly sunny skies with about 12-13 days being mostly overcast.

November in NYC

About 9-10 days during November will see some precipitation.

However, only about 3 days see significant amounts of 0.5 inches (13mm) or more. 


DOES IT SNOW IN NYC IN NOVEMBER?

Snow is fairly rare in November but a light dusting does occur about once every couple of years with an inch (about 2.4 cm) or more snowfall about once every decade.

There is an 89% chance for normal to above-normal temperatures with near-normal rainfall.

WHAT TO WEAR IN NOVEMBER

November in New York is cold, so you want to make sure you pack enough.

We've made a list below of what to pack for New York in November:


1. Coat

A medium-heavy coat or jacket is good to pack. Pair it with a hat and a scarf and you're all set for a walking tour!

2. Sweaters

Weather in November varies from mild to cold weather, so layers are best.

Packing a few sweaters is a good idea, and they make it easy to dress to your comfort level. 


3. Long Pants

Warm, long pants should be packed. Jeans or wool pants are best.

If you plan on wearing a long skirt we recommend thick leggings underneath! These fleece-lined tights will work as well.
