This post is a summary of the weather in April in NYC, with tips on what to wear and things to do. April is a great time to be outdoors, as higher daytime tempertures means that heavy jackets are no longer needed.
Early in April afternoon high temperatures tend to be in the mid-50s f (11-14C) while the overnight lows are mostly in the upper 30s f to near 40 f (3-5C). Low temperatures fall to 32f (0C) or less, on average, only on 1 day this month.
As month draws to a close those afternoon temperatures will rise into the low to mid 60s f (17-19C) with the early morning lows now mostly in the mid to upper 40s f (7-10C). Some of the warmer afternoons will reach up into the mid-70s f (23-24C) or higher. Days where the temperature reaches 90f (32C) or more occur only about once every 3-4 years. In the past, April in New York City has seen temperature extremes as high as 96f (35.6C) and as low as 12 f (11.1C)
About 19 days, on average, this month will see either sunny or at least partly sunny skies so this is a great time to be outdoors. About 10 days during this month will see some rain, however, only 2 of these days usually see significant rainfalls of 0.5 inches (13mm) or more. Snow is fairly rare this month with measurable snowfall being reported only about once every 10 years.
Early April will require a couple of warm sweaters and at least a medium-weight jacket or coat. However, as the month progresses, a light jacket, windbreaker or just a sweater should be enough for the warmer days. Layers are the key to dressing in NYC in the spring. Always have a few things you can take off/put on as the temperature changes throughout the day. An umbrella and water proof shoes are also important as random showers are frequent.
