Free-Walking-Tours

Overview

Welcome to Free Tours by Foot Miami. Discovering a city should never be limited to your budget.

While we are not currently offering our live, pay-what-you-wish walking tours here in Miami, we do have several self-guided tours for you to use to explore the city, which we list below.

We also have a GPS audio tour of South Beach and the Art Deco District (Listen to a sample).

Here is how it works:

  1. Purchase an audio tour ($1.99/download)
  2. Get a confirmation email with .mp3, .pdf, and embeddable Google Map
  3. Enjoy the tour(s).

Be sure to read our comparison posts on bus tours, boat and cruise tours, and Everglades/swamp tours.

Regardless of the type of walking tour you want to take, chances are that you’ll find something to enjoy with the Go Miami Card.

Some of the tours we’ll be discussing below are actually included at no extra charge with the purchase of one form or another of this pass.

Alternatively, this card can also give you access to free bike rentals that will allow you to take bike tours of Shark Valley or other areas in and around Miami.

No matter which tours you go on, chances are that you’ll be able to take advantage of the Go Miami card at some point.

Art Walking Tours

There’s something uniquely beautiful about the artistic and architectural style of Miami.

Scattered across the city are some of the finest examples of street art in the world, featuring bright and vivid colors that truly represent the cultural history of the area.

There is a lot to take in, and there are quite a few Miami walking tours available to show you the way.

Many of these art walking tours will be located on or near Miami Beach, depending on the neighborhoods that they intend to introduce.

You can expect prices to stay fairly low, with the average cost between $20 and $60 per person. Each service provides a variety of different walking tours, so you’ll have to pick the one that interests you the most.

Before you purchase a ticket, have a look at our free Self-Guided Miami Art Deco District Tour. You'll see many of the same beautiful buildings covered on paid tours without spending a dime!

Wynwood Art Walk Tours

If you really want to experience the cultural melting pot of Miami, this walking tour will take you around one of the most unique neighborhoods in the city.

In Wynwood, you’ll see some of the finest graffiti street art in the world juxtaposed against modern art and architecture.

The postmodern world meets the modern world and tells a story that you might not experience anywhere else.

This particular company offers a variety of Art Walk tours in and around Wynwood. Make sure to choose a walking tour that best represents the kind of art that you are interested in learning more about.

Wynwood Art Walk Tours has earned 4 ½ stars on both TripAdvisor and Yelp, with some reviewers calling it “the real Miami.”

As always, there are a few negative reviews, and most of them stem from the size of the crowd that this attraction draws.

If you’re not interested in taking this Miami walking tour with a bunch of other people, it might be better to consider their self-guided tour options.

Whatever you decide to do, Wynwood is definitely a neighborhood you will want to visit while you are in Miami, because it is an absolutely beautiful escape from the traditional South Beach experience.

If you live in the area and you still haven’t seen this neighborhood and its artistic beauty for yourself, perhaps it’s time to make a trip.

The Official Art Deco Walking Tour

Not to be confused with the previous opportunity, this Miami walking tour has the prestige of the Miami Design Preservation League behind its name.

Both tours are highly rated, but this one is run by the MDPL, so you can expect to learn a lot about the history of the art and architecture in the area on this tour.

In addition to their standard Art Deco walking tour, they also provide tours of Jewish Miami Beach, Miami Modern Architecture, and even self-guided tours via audio in an mp3 format.

If you want to learn more about the history of this beautiful city, the Official Art Deco Walking Tour from the MDPL is an excellent option.

With a five star rating on TripAdvisor and 4 ½ stars on Yelp, it’s safe to say that this is a great tour.

There aren’t many negative reviews for this walking tour, but those that are negative tend to complain that this isn’t the kind of experience where a local shows you around the city.

Every glowing review talks about how great the tour guides are and how informative the walking tours can be. With that in mind, it’s hard to see those negative comments as any kind of barometer for what to expect.

If you want to learn about the history of Miami, this is a highly rated experience that hundreds of reviewers have recommended.

Little Havana Walking Tours

There is a large Cuban community in Miami, so it shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise that there is also a part of the city known as Little Havana.

The history behind this district and the people in it is quite interesting, and any walking tour you take through this neighborhood is sure to be incredibly informative.

If you want to discover Miami through the eyes of its residents, this is definitely a location that you should try to experience.

Whether you decide to visit for a self-guided tour or take one of the Miami walking tours we discuss below, Little Havana should be a part of every trip to the Magic City.

Wynwood Art Walk Tours

In addition to their explorations of Wynwood and the street art culture in that neighborhood, this company also offers tours of Calle Ocho.

As you walk through Little Havana, you'll have an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the area, and you'll also learn about the Cuban tradition of rolling cigars.

See Domino Park, the Calle Ocho Walk of Fame, the historic Ball & Chain bar, and many other notable sites throughout the neighborhood.

You'll learn about the Cuban heritage and history of the area through the Bay of Pigs Monument, live music and meet with a local Cuban historian.

Little Havana Walking Tours

Much like we saw with the Art Walk tours, several of the Little Havana tours are also similarly named.

Little Havana Walking Tours is yet another small, locally owned tour company that provides a closer look at what makes the area so vibrant.

Described as a cultural tour, you can expect to learn a lot about the history of Miami and its Cuban residents when you take advantage of this opportunity.

These Miami walking tours include food tasting, so make sure to save a little room in your stomach for some tasty local treats.

If you’re trying to avoid the tourist traps and you really want to get a sense for what the city is like, this is the kind of experience you should seek out.

Little Havana Walking Tours sports a five star rating on TripAdvisor, but unlike the previous tour, this one does not include a guide who has literally written the book on the subject.

That being said, reviews are generally favorable for this company, and there do not appear to be any negative comments at all. In addition to the positive response, they also offer tours almost every day.

Whether you’re visiting for a few days or you’re a Miami native, you’ll still be able to experience this walking tour without worrying about whether or not their schedule matches with your own.

Self Guided Miami Walking Tours

As you might have guessed, there are a plethora of self-guided walking tours in Miami. The price of a self-guided tour is generally up to you.

Depending on whether or not you would like to purchase anything on your trip, you could actually take advantage of these opportunities without paying a dime.

If you don’t want to walk everywhere, you could use the GoMiami Card to get free bike rentals and bus service to take you wherever the tour is located.

No matter how you choose to take advantage of these self-guided tours, chances are that you will have a good time and learn a lot about the culture and history of Miami.

Calle Ocho Self-Guided Tour

Located in the heart of Little Havana, Calle Ocho is one of the most historically and culturally vibrant streets in Miami.

Provided by none other than National Geographic, this self-guided tour is entirely free and will take you past a lot of important landmarks.

All told, there are 13 stops in this Miami walking tour that will introduce you to areas such as the Cuban Memorial Plaza, the Walkway of the Stars, and Maximo Gomez Park.

In addition to these stops, you’ll also have the opportunity to discover a variety of local businesses on Calle Ocho, including a few Cuban Coffee counters.

Enjoy the flavor of Little Havana while avoiding the crowds with your own self-guided walking tour.

Sadly, since this is a free tour provided by a well-known magazine, there aren’t really any reviews of the tour itself.

However, you will find reviews of Calle Ocho on TripAdvisor, and some of them are not good.

Most of the reviews of this historic street in Little Havana are favorable, but some visitors report feeling unsafe and bored, admitting that they may have come on the wrong day.

There’s always a possibility that you’ll miss what everyone else is seeing, but with a tour guide like National Geographic, it’s hard to go wrong.

Downtown Miami Waterfront Walking Tour

While this Miami walking tour isn’t incredibly informative, it is one of the few tours that will allow you to explore the waterfront area downtown.

The self-guided tour takes you into Bayfront Park, through Bayside Marketplace, onto Pier 5 and then down to Freedom Tower.

There are several sights to see and a lot of information to discover about the area. One of the advantages of this tour is that it will take you to Bayside Marketplace, which is a wonderful place to shop and get a bite to eat.

If you’re looking for a walking tour that will allow you to take a break and relax a little, this might be the perfect choice.

Even if the tour itself is not very educational, the locations you will be visiting are all highly rated destinations.

Bayfront Park, Bayside Marketplace and Freedom Tower are all significant for a variety of reasons, and it doesn’t hurt that they are also local hotspots.

Whether you’re a visitor from out of town or you live in Miami and you want to have some fun, this self-guided Miami Waterfront Walking Tour is an excellent option.

Miami Street Art Walking Tour

If you want to avoid the crowds and take your own excursion to experience the beautiful street art of Miami, this is a fantastic opportunity.

Provided by the Huffington Post, this tour will take you through the neighborhood of Wynwood, where you will see several wonderful works of art.

This Miami walking tour will take you to the Wynwood Building, the Wynwood Walls, Bookleggers, and several notable works of graffiti.

If you’re interested in seeing this wonderful area for yourself, this tour will definitely show you where to go.

Unfortunately, it’s not a very informative self-guided tour, so you will probably want to do extra research while planning out your trip.

Ultimately, the Downtown Miami Waterfront Tour is more educational than this one.

They call it a self-guided tour, but you’re basically just being lead around to a lot of different locations where you will see beautiful representations of street art.

If that’s exactly what you want, then this might be your best option. However, if you’re looking for something more informative, you might want to consider one of the guided tours in this area.

The Wynwood Walls are one of the highest rated destinations in all of Miami, so it’s definitely worth a visit.

Other Miami Walking Tours

There are several other walking tours offered in and around Miami, but they don’t necessarily fit into any of the above categories.

If you’re looking for an experience that will introduce you to a side of the Magic City that you typically wouldn’t see, one of the following walking tours could prove very insightful.

Even if you’re a Florida native, these Miami walking tours could show you a side of the city that you’ve never seen before.

Jewish Walking Tour

Miami may be noted for its Cuban population, but there is also a sizable Jewish community in the area.

As a matter of fact, they have a pretty strong history in southern Florida, including a strong tradition of serving excellent food.

If you want to experience this cultural melting pot for yourself, the Jewish Museum of Florida provides a wonderful walking tour.

The excursion lasts for 2-3 hours and covers the historical impact of the local Jewish neighborhoods.

Being that this Miami walking tour is offered by a museum, you probably won’t be too surprised to discover that it is highly rated on TripAdvisor.

Reviewers report that the experience is very educational. Everything that we’ve seen about the Jewish Walking Tour from the Jewish Museum of Florida has been very positive.

It’s safe to say that this is an excellent option for anyone who wants to explore a side of Miami that they might not have seen before.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Walking Tours

This one will take you a little further out from the city center of Miami, but it’s well worth the visit. They offer a variety of different walking tours of the garden, and all of them are very educational.

If you’re looking for a tropical paradise that represents the wonderful ecosystem of southern Florida, a trip to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is an absolute must.

If you’re only visiting the city for a few days, you might have to take a bus or rent a car in order to make the voyage, but you definitely won’t regret the decision.

Walking tours include closer looks at the different types of butterflies and birds that flock to the region as well as the beautiful botany and plant life of the area.

The reviews for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden are pretty much stellar across the board. Even the low ratings typically admit that the garden is beautiful and worth a visit.

When it comes to the ratings of each walking tour, there don’t appear to be any unhappy tourists.

Considering that their guided walking tours are free with admission, this is a great opportunity to experience the environment of southern Florida without having to travel out into the actual Everglades.
