How is the Weather in Rome in August?

August in Rome features very warm to hot and often humid afternoons and early evenings. 

Late nights and mornings tend to be mostly comfortable.


Temperatures

Afternoon high temperatures during early August tend to average near 30-31 C (86-88 F).

Late in August, the afternoon highs will cool a bit to 28-29 C (82-84F). 

You can expect 2-3 afternoons, especially early in the month, to reach up to 32 C (90 F) or more.

The record high temperature in Rome during August is 41.8 C (107.2 5).  

Late night and early morning low temperatures this month tend to be near 19 C (66-67 F) early in the month, falling to near 17 C (62-63 F) by the end of the month.

A few of the cooler mornings, especially late in August, can dip down near 14 C (57 F). 

The record low temperature for Rome in August is 9.3 C (48.7 F).


Sun and Rain

Rome during August features ample sunshine with 23 sunny and 3 partly sunny days. Only 5 days, on average, will be mostly cloudy.

There is a slightly higher risk for clouds near the end of the month than at the start.

Some rain falls only on about 4 days this month, however, only 2-3 days record at least 1 mm (0.04 inches) and 1 day will receive 10 mm (0.40 inches or more. 

Rain is most likely near the end of the month.


Daylight

The number of daylight hours decreases rapidly this month from about 14.4 hours on the 1st to about 13.2 hours by the 31st.


Windspeed

The wind speeds during this month are mostly light to gentle averaging 6-19 kph (4-12 mph).


Ocean and Beaches

Within about an hour of the city are several good beaches and the water is warm this month. Ocean temperatures usually range from 24 C to 26 C (75-79 F). 


What to Wear in Rome During August?

August continues the very warm temperatures so it will be best to dress light and airy. Cotton pants, summer dresses, shorts, tees, or other cotton tops work well.

There will be lots of sun so don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen, and a sun hat. Also bring sandals and some comfortable walking shoes.

If you plan to visit the Vatican, best to check their dress code first.


Things to Do in Rome During August

It's usually pretty hot in Rome this month, and there will more than likely be plenty of sunny days to enjoy, so you might want to consider a pay-what-you-wish walking tour.

One of the best activities to enjoy during this time of year is the evening shows at the Forum of Caesar and the Forum of Augustus, since it's much cooler at night than during the day.

Chances are it will be busy at all the major attractions, so you might also want to consider spending some time either in Villa Borghese or walking down Via Appia.
