How is the Weather in Dublin in January?

January in Dublin tends to be cold and damp and is considered to be a tourist off-season.

Prices will be lower, and you can find better deals and good bargains.


Daytime high temperatures tend to be around 7C-8C (about 47F) with a few of the warmer afternoons reaching up near 12 C (mid-50s F).

The record high temperature in Dublin during January is 16.5 C (61.7 F).

Late night and early morning low temperatures will generally be around 2-3 C (mid-upper 30s F). 

A few of the colder mornings can dip down to near -1 C (about 30 F) and in fact, you should expect 7 days this month with lows at or below 0 C (32 F). 

The record low temperature in Dublin during January is -9.5 C (14.9 F). 

Sky and Precipitation

About 10-11 days will be sunny, or at least partly sunny.

Precipitation falls on about 17 days this month, however, only about 4 of these days will record 5mm (0.2 inches) or more. 

Snow in some form occurs on about 4-5 days with accumulations of 2.5 cm (1 inch) or more falling on 1-2 days.


The shortest day is January 1st with only 7.6 hours of daylight. 

Daylight hours gradually increase throughout this month, ending with 8.9 hours of daylight by the 31st.


Dublin during January is quite breezy with mostly moderate breezes of 13-18 mph (20-28 kph) prevailing but can often increase to fresh to strong breezes at 19-31 mph (29-49 kph).

Ocean Temperatures

Dublin lies along the western edge of the Irish Sea which during January is very cold with water temperatures averaging 8-9 C (mid-upper 40s F).

What to Wear in Dublin during January?

January in Dublin is cold so bring along winter attire including jeans or other heavy trousers.

Also include long sleeve tops and shirts, hoodies, and a warm and preferably waterproof coat. 

A couple of scarves, some gloves and warm socks will also help. Don’t forget some good walking shoes or boots.

Things to Do in Dublin in January

Although it is usually somewhat cold in January, there's never really a bad time to take a free walking tour in Dublin.

That said, if you are looking to stay mostly indoors, there are several additional activities to consider.

One fun idea is to take a distillery tour at either Guinness Storehouse, the Jameson Distillery, or Teeling Distillery.

There are also usually at least a few great concerts or theatrical productions to attend.
