This post is about the weather in April in Washington, D.C., including tips on what to wear and on things to do. If you’re visiting around the turn of the month, look at our weather in March and May posts!
Spring weather fully arrives in the Nation’s Capital during April as the temperatures steadily rise throughout the month.
Early in April, the morning low temperatures tend to be low to mid-40s F (5-7 C) with a few mornings dipping into the mid-30s F (1-2 C) while the afternoon highs tend to be in the low 60’s F (16-17 C).
As the month progresses, the morning lows warm to the low to mid-50s F (10-12 C) while the afternoon highs are most likely to reach into the low to mid-70s F (21-23 C) with a few of the warmer days reaching or exceeding 82 F (about 28C).
Past Aprils in Washington DC have seen extremes as high as 95 F (35 C) to as low as 24 F (-4.4 C).
About 16 days this month will see sunny or at least partly sunny skies over DC with some form of precipitation falling on about 10-11 days.
Significant precipitation amounts of 0.5 inches (13mm) or more, however, usually occur on only 2 or 3 days.
Snow is rare this month falling only on about 1 day every 10 years or so.
Be sure to read out post on What to Wear and Pack in DC for advice all year round on DC weather and how to prepare for it.
A medium-weight jacket or coat will be needed for the colder days early this month, however, a sweater or a light windbreaker may be all that is required by month’s end to enjoy this city.
Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes so you can enjoy some of our special springtime walking tours.
A rain jacket or umbrella is a wise addition to your suitcase – but be sure not to bring a pointed umbrella as those are not allowed in many of the secure buildings, such as the US Capitol.
