CANDEN | Manager & Tour Guide
Canden earned a BA in History from Elon University and Masters in History from University College London. She's originally from North Carolina but has been guiding in Washington, DC for nearly 10 years. Canden entered the real world as a teacher but left the profession for tour guiding, which has all the fun parts of teaching but none of the tests, desks or principals!
DC by Foot is run mostly from Canden's cell phone while leading tours or taking her 2 kids on adventures around the city. When not guiding, she can probably be found traveling herself or writing books about DC History!
Favorite Tour to Lead: Historic Georgetown - there is so much hidden history in this neighborhood. A who's who of DC and American history but also stories of "common people" that really show you a different side of residential DC.
DAN | Tour Guide & Weather Expert
Dan grew up minutes away from important Civil War battlefields like Antietam and Harpers Ferry, fostering in him a lifelong love of American history. He took that love to Dartmouth College and graduated with a degree in History and Moral Philosophy. He then went on down to Georgia, where he taught high school US History. He decided he needed to move a bit closer to home, settled in DC in 2005, and soon started teaching history, civics, and journalism at a local school.
He then took on a position at a national civics education organization, helping teachers from all over the country use the sites and resources of Washington, DC in their classrooms back home. When he isn’t rooting for the Washington Nationals (he lives 2 blocks from the stadium!), he’s usually exploring the many awesome food options in the city, perfecting his “low and slow” brisket, or coming up with new and creative things to dip in batter and deep fry.
BECCA | Tour Guide & Social Media Manager
Becca is a native Texan whose annual childhood treks to D.C. resulted in a lifelong love of our nation's capital. After graduating from Randolph-Macon Woman's College (now Randolph College), she's pursued a decades-long career in public history and tourism. Becca can be seen on Mysteries at the Museum on the Travel Channel, is a lead contributor and researcher for the Tour Guide Tell All podcast, and has been featured in local press outlets such as DCist, WAMU, Washingtonian, Washington City Paper, and more. She is also the co-author of the 111 Places in Women's History in Washington, DC That You Must Not Miss guidebook, published in 2021.
When she's not leading tours, you can usually find her rooting for a local sports team or eating her way through the city.
PRI | CFO & Tour Guide with Dubai by Foot
Pri is originally from India, lived in the US for 8 years and now splits her life between DC, Dubai and Mumbai. Pri is an avid number cruncher and loves analyzing the statistics of all our tours.
Pri is an author and her first book The Ultimate Family Business Survival Guide (published by Pan Macmillan) addresses the biggest pressure points facing next gen Indians in family businesses.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Gender and Women’s Studies from Connecticut College and a master’s degree in International Public Finance from New York University.
COLIN | Tour Guide
Whether it happened a few hours ago or it happened a few decades ago, Colin loves to tell an audience a good history-making story. Two outlets give him the chance to do this. Colin has one job producing T.V. news and another guiding tours
For a history-loving political junkie like him, this life in D.C. is like living the dream. But his journey started a few hours north in the Garden State. He is a proud New Jersey native and holds a Bachelor’s degree from Rowan University in Radio, T.V. and Film.
CECILIA | Tour Guide
Cecilia hails from Wisconsin, the land flowing with beer and cheese. She made her way to D.C. by way of Hawaii and New Jersey to put her International Relations background to good use.
When she is not giving tours Cecilia enjoys excursions into the wilderness, singing in elevators, experimental cooking and looking for and sharing fun facts of a variety of different topics!
INGEBORG | Tour Guide
Ingeborg was born and raised in Washington, DC and has a diverse professional background, with a BA in Economics from the University of Delaware and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. After spending years as a Finance professional, she decided to pursue a career more aligned with her interests.
She is a published author of “Gudrun’s Kitchen: Recipes from a Norwegian Family” (Wisconsin Historical Society Press, 2010), and two self-published books of poetry (“Slave Revolt,” 2012 and “Daughter of the District,” 2013 ).
Ingeborg has been a licensed professional DC Tour Guide since early 2016 and she loves nothing more than constantly learning about and exploring her beloved hometown and sharing that knowledge and passion with people from all over the world. She wants every visitor to love this place as much as she does.
JIM | Tour Guide
Jim is originally from Pennsylvania and has lived in Alexandria, VA for four years. He has been in the environmental education field for his whole career and lived in NY, CA, and MD. Jim has always had a strong interest in history and tried to learn everything he could about the places he lived in. He has really enjoyed living in the DC area and discovering all the stories in and around the city. Being a tour guide has enabled Jim to become even more immersed in these stories as he shares them with others.
My favorite tour to lead is the Ghosts of Georgetown Tour because the stories offer a great combination of good old fashioned spookiness and interesting history that is easily brought to life in such a beautiful setting. Also, who doesn't love the Exorcist Stairs?
Melissa | Tour Guide
Melissa is a Theatre Artist and Educator who moonlights as a DC Tour Guide. She specializes in Ghosts, Murder, and the historically underrepresented.
Originally from Bullhead City, Arizona, the unceded lands of the Pipa Aha Macav, she has spent over a decade moving around the US and Abroad for work, primarily in Costumes but also scenic and lighting design. She is currently the Wardrobe Supervisor and Costume Shop Associate at The Olney Theatre Center for the Arts and designs on the side.
In her spare time (it exists!) Melissa loves to make pickles, bake bread, and hang out with her cat @blaketheshake.
Max | Tour Guide
Why is this native Californian so drawn to DC history? Max fell in love with the stories of the Civil War ever since he made his first visits to the historic battlefields. Max is also enthusiastic about bike camping and has taken his two wheels on the same route where John Wilkes Booth fled after the assassination.
When not delving into the annals of Abraham and abolition, Max leads a political non-profit focused on animal issues.
One of the most frequently asked questions on our tours is how this all got started.
In the Summer of 2007, Ben and Brody started a small company leading walking tours of the National Mall – filled with humor, history and sometimes magic, these tours were name-your-own-price and allowed guests to pay at the end.
MobileTours, run by Rich, was already running mobile app tours of the National Mall and Arlington National Cemetery, as well as a version of a Lincoln Assassination Tour for segways. Stephen was working with MobileTours to create a walking tour version of Lincoln Assassination and a Ghosts of Georgetown tour. When MobileTours owner Rich, his brother Eddie, and Stephen combined MobileTours with DC by Foot in January 2009, it created an unstoppable force of trivia.
Today, Ben, Brody, and Eddie have moved on to the real world of lawyering and technology start-ups in New York City and Los Angeles. Rich helps run Dubai by Foot.
After a few years in DC, Stephen left for the concrete pastures of New York City, where he started Free Tours by Foot in New York City. With the help of Canden, the company has expanded in new cities and new tours. We now offer tours in Washington DC, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Charleston, Chicago, New Orleans, London, and Berlin.
DC by Foot has expanded to offer more than fourteen different types of tours – from the National Mall to off the beaten path on U Street. Between all of our DC guides, we have decades of guiding experience, multiple degrees in History, Museum Studies and/or Education, past and current teachers, and a few books on local history published.
If we all ever had the same night off, I think it would be safe to say we’d have the best pub quiz team in the city! But DC by Foot offers tours 365 days of the year – public and private, walking and bus.
We are a company run by guides – and what makes DC by Foot so successful is the intelligence, humor and quirkiness of our guides.
