The Best Christmas Markets in Copenhagen

The spirit of Christmas is everywhere in Copenhagen, especially in the charming Christmas markets (Julemarkeds) throughout the city.

From early to mid-November until a few days before Christmas you can shop for all kinds of gifts and try delicious foods at the markets included in this post.

Kongens Nytorv

This traditional Christmas market is located in Copenagen’s city centre in the beautiful King's New Square built in 1908. Here you can do some great shopping in an elegant setting.

The square is surrounded by the iconic Magasin du Nord department store decked out with stunning Christmas lights. 

Vendors sell hand-crafted goods and gifts from charming wooden stalls.

Warm up by sipping hot chocolate, apple punch and glühwein (German-style mulled wine flavored with oranges, cloves and cinnamon).

Santa Claus is on hand every Thursday to Sunday between 1 and 5 p.m. to greet children and pose with them for a free photo.

The market is at the end of Strøget pedestrian street which has beautiful Christmas lights

Nyhavn Christmas Market

This traditional Christmas market is set against the picturesque backdrop of Copenhagen’s iconic canal and colorful houses.

This is Copenhagen’s most photographed locale and it is even more special at Christmas with holiday lights hanging from the masts of boats and market stalls draped in garlands.

Stroll song the cobblestones and shop for all sorts of lovely gifts like tree ornaments, candles, handmade woolen apparel, and more.

TIP: Many canal sightseeing cruises begin at Nyhavn, so why not hop on a boat and see Copenhagen from the water?

Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market

This Christmas market does require that you buy a ticket but it is well worth it.

Tivoli Gardens is a Copenhagen attraction that is popular year-round. At Christmastime, it is even better!

This amusement park and gardens are decorated with hundreds of thousands of lights and Christmas trees.

Its wonderful Christmas market with 60 or so wooden stalls is a joy to wander through.

Shop for traditional Danish gifts and eat Danish holiday foods like gløgg, æbleskiver, caramelized almonds and so much more.

Of course, you’ll want to go on all the rides too!

You can purchase individual purchase tickets to Tivoli Gardens online or get tickets at a discount using either a Copenhagen tourist pass.

  • Dates: 2024 dates TBD. November 10 to December 31 were the last year dates. Open Christmas Day but closes at 4 p.m. on December 24.

Højbro Plads

Located in the historic High Bridge Square, this market is one to go for a very Christmas-y atmosphere, along with delicious foods and traditional gifts.

The square is decorated with Christmas trees and 280,000 sparking lights. Santa’s sleigh and reindeer are there as well.

You’ll meet mischievous Christmas elves, along with Santa on Mondays to Fridays between 3 and 6 p.m. He will pose for a free photo!

The market has a German feel and many vendors come from Germany. You’ll be able to try German foods like currywurst and glühwein.

Other yummy snacks include mini crepes with sauces like Nutella and æbleskiver (Danish doughnuts) and Danish glogg. (mulled wine spiced with cinnamon and cloves).

The market is near the Strøget pedestrian street where the Christmas lights are gorgeous. 

TIP: Take advantage of the free viewing platform at the nearby Christiansborg Palace Tower.

Hans Christian Andersen Market

Named for the famous Danish fairy tale author, this quaint Christmas market has a special feel to it.

Each stall is named after Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. You may get to meet the author himself (or at least someone in costume!)

Shop for an array of authentic gift items and eat traditional Danish Christmas foods and drinks.

This market is ideal for young children as there is an old-fashioned carousel and Santa will be around for photos every Wednesday-Sunday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
