December brings winter weather to Boston, with cold temperatures, short days, and the possibility of snow.
As a retired meteorologist turned tour guide, I didn't expect that I'd use my forecasting experience so much in my new career in tourism. But here I am, answering weather questions as a blogger almost as often as I did when I was a weatherman.
So, what can you expect from Boston weather in December? Here's what you need to know about temperatures, precipitation, snow, daylight, what to wear, and things to do during your visit.

How Cold Is Boston in December?
Boston gets progressively colder throughout December as winter settles in.
Early in the month, afternoon temperatures typically reach the low-to-mid 40s°F (about 6–7°C), while overnight temperatures are generally in the mid-30s°F (1–2°C).
By the end of December, afternoon temperatures are more likely to be in the upper 30s°F (around 3–4°C), with overnight temperatures commonly falling into the 20s°F (around -3 to -4°C).

There can still be occasional mild days, particularly early in the month, when temperatures climb into the 50s°F (10°C or higher). However, I wouldn't plan a December trip expecting warm weather.
Cold snaps can bring temperatures well below freezing, especially overnight and during the second half of the month.
If you're planning to spend a lot of time sightseeing outdoors, layers and a warm coat are essential for December in Boston.
How Much Sun and Precipitation Does Boston Get in December?
December is one of Boston's cloudier months, and precipitation can fall as rain, snow, sleet, or a mixture of winter weather.
You should expect some wet days during the month, although precipitation doesn't necessarily last all day. A rainy or snowy morning can sometimes give way to clearer weather later.
Because conditions can change quickly, it's worth checking the forecast shortly before heading out each day.

If you're planning to walk around Boston, a waterproof outer layer and shoes that can handle wet sidewalks are useful additions to your packing list.
Does It Snow in Boston in December?
Yes, it can definitely snow in Boston in December.
Snowfall varies considerably from year to year, though. Some Decembers have several snowstorms, while others are relatively mild.
The chance of snow generally increases as the month progresses. If you're visiting around Christmas or New Year's Eve, it's a good idea to be prepared for the possibility of accumulating snow and freezing temperatures.
Snow can make Boston especially beautiful during the holiday season, but it can also make walking more difficult. If snow is in the forecast, waterproof boots or shoes with good traction are a smart choice.
How Much Daylight Does Boston Get in December?
One of the biggest changes you'll notice when visiting Boston in December is how early it gets dark.
Boston has roughly 9 hours of daylight around the beginning of December, and daylight decreases slightly before the winter solstice.
Sunset is generally around 4:10 p.m. in early December and remains close to 4:15 p.m. later in the month.
This is important if you're planning outdoor sightseeing. If you want to spend several hours walking around Boston, start earlier in the day so you can take advantage of the available daylight.
The upside is that the early darkness gives you plenty of opportunities to see Boston's holiday lights and decorations after sunset.
What to Wear in Boston in December?
Plan for winter weather when visiting Boston in December.
I recommend packing:
- A warm winter coat
- Sweaters or other warm layers
- Long pants or jeans
- A hat and gloves
- Warm socks
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Waterproof boots or shoes if snow is in the forecast
- A rain jacket or other waterproof outer layer
Layers are particularly useful because you'll often move between heated indoor spaces and the cold outdoors.

And don't underestimate the importance of good footwear. Boston is a walking city, and cold, wet, or snowy sidewalks can make sightseeing uncomfortable if you aren't prepared.
Is December a Good Time to Visit Boston?
December can be a wonderful time to visit Boston if you're prepared for cold weather.
The city takes on a festive atmosphere during the holiday season, and the early sunsets mean you can see holiday lights and decorations during the evening.
The trade-off is the weather. December can bring cold temperatures, rain, snow, ice, and strong winds.
If you prefer mild weather and long days for sightseeing, another time of year may be better. But if you enjoy the atmosphere of a winter city and don't mind bundling up, December can be a memorable time to visit Boston.
Things to Do in Boston in December
There is plenty to do in Boston in December, whether the weather is mild enough for outdoor sightseeing or you need to escape the cold.
Take a Boston Walking Tour
On a reasonably mild day, a walking tour is a great way to experience Boston's historic neighborhoods and landmarks.
The Freedom Trail is particularly interesting during the holiday season, although much of the route is outdoors, so dress appropriately for the weather.
If it's cold, windy, or snowy, consider choosing a shorter outdoor activity and combining it with an indoor attraction.
See Boston's Holiday Lights and Decorations
December is a great month to explore Boston after dark.
Holiday decorations and lights can be found throughout the city, and the early sunset means you don't have to stay up late to enjoy them.
Go Ice Skating

The Boston Common Frog Pond is a popular seasonal destination when it is open, and its location makes it easy to combine skating with sightseeing around Boston Common and the historic downtown area.
Visit Boston's Museums
A cold or snowy December day is a good excuse to explore Boston's many museums.
The Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, and other indoor attractions provide plenty of options when the weather isn't suitable for spending the day outdoors.
