The Weather in Amsterdam in October

Updated: September 13, 2023

Amsterdam during October tends to be a bit wet and breezy with cool afternoons and generally cold nights.

As a retired meteorologist turned tour guide, I didn't expect that I would use my experience as a forecaster in my new career in tourism.

But here I am, finding myself answering more weather questions as a blogger than I ever did as a weatherman.

So, here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the weather in Amsterdam in October.

Ocean Temperatures

The beaches near Amsterdam are rugged but offer great photo ops.

However, the ocean temperatures during October are cold, averaging 15-16 C (59-61 F) which is definitely not enjoyable for most people.

What to Wear in Amsterdam in October?

October brings colder and breezy weather to Amsterdam so dress accordingly.

You should bring along some long-sleeved shirts, as well as some sweatshirts or sweaters plus a medium-weight waterproof jacket, and plan to dress in layers.

For rainy days, pack an umbrella or rain jacket, and don’t forget to bring comfortable but water-tight walking shoes.

Things to Do in Amsterdam in October

With the fall weather setting in, there won't be too many sunny days this month, but you might still want to consider taking a pay-what-you-wish walking tour in Amsterdam.

If you're interested in walking around, October is actually the month of the Amsterdam City Walk, an event that includes several notable sites and landmarks along the journey.

The TCS Marathon will also be held this month, and everyone is welcome to cheer on the participants for free!

In addition to these fun activities, AFC Ajax will also be playing a few home games this month, giving you the chance to see Amsterdam's team at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

October is also the month of the Grachtenrace in Amsterdam, a sloop rowing canal boat race.

There are a lot of other fun activities this month, and you can learn more about them in our full post about things to do in Amsterdam in October.
