This post is about the weather in June in Washington, DC, including average temperatures and rainfall as well as tips on what to wear and things to do.
Early in June, morning low temperatures tend to be in the lower 60s F (15-17 C) with a few of the cooler mornings dipping into the mid-50s F (12-13C).
Afternoon highs early in the month tend to be near 80F (26-27C).
By the end of June, the afternoon high temperatures generally will reach the mid to upper 80s F (30-32 C) while the morning and evening lows will dip fall into the upper 60s F to near 70 F (20-21 C).
On a few of the warmer days, you should expect highs reaching up into the mid-90s F (34-35C) or more. On average, about 6-7 days this month will likely reach or exceed 90F (32C).
During past Junes, the temperature Washington, DC has seen temperature extremes from 47 F (8.3 C) to 104 F (40 C).
Washington, DC usually sees sunny or at least partly sunny skies on about 18 days this month with rain occurring on about 9 or 10 days with thunderstorms likely on 6 days.
Significant rainfalls of 1/2 inch (13 mm) or more, however, occur only on 2-3 days. June is a great month to take a walking tour.
Winds tend to be light to moderate, averaging between 3 mph (5 kph) and 15 mph (24 kph) with gusts at times exceeding 20 mph (32kph), especially in thunderstorms.
A light-weight jacket or windbreaker or a couple of sweaters may be all you need for the cooler days of early June.
For the rest of the month, summer wear is best but bring an umbrella for those occasional thunderstorms.
