This post is a how to find Number 12 Grimmauld Place.  In the world of Harry Potter, Number 12 Grimmauld Place is important for two reasons: Firstly, it serves as the headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix and secondly because Sirius wills it to Harry after he dies, making it Harry’s first true home.  And it is just 1 of dozens of Harry Potter locations in London.

What is Number 12 Grimmauld Place?

Number 12 Grimmauld Place had for centuries been the home of the Black Family. The house is invisible to anybody who does not know it exists, as it is protected by a Fidelius Charm which also makes it unplottable. This means that muggles only see numbers 11 and 13 on the residential street the house sits on - believing that the missing number 12 was simply a mistake made when the houses were numbered!

The house was built as a regular muggle townhouse and was taken over by an early member of the Black family who “convinced” the muggle who lived there to leave! It was since passed down through the generations of the family and Harrys’ godfather, Sirius Black, was raised here. When Sirius was sent to Azkaban, he handed over to Professor Dumbledore to be used as the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, a purpose it served when Harry became the house’s owner after Sirius was murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange.

After Dumbledore died, the house was abandoned and then later used by the trio when they were on the run from the Ministry of Magic before being abandoned again when a Deatheater followed Hermione to the house. There is no mention of it after the Second Wizarding War and as of now, we don’t know if Harry or his family ever returned.

Where is Number 12 Grimmauld Place?

J.K. Rowling describes the house as being located in London, in the borough of Islington - just a short walk up from King’s Cross Station (where Platform 9 3/4 is located).

Claremont Square: Tucked away on an unassuming street in Islington lies Claremont Square, the filming location of Sirius Black’s familial residence. This square was used for filming on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  The address you are looking for is 23-29 Claremont Square.  Use this Google map for directions to this location.

Where is the REAL 12 Grimmauld Place?

Lincoln’s Inn Fields: A charming square with Georgian terraced building now occupied by lawyers and surgeons, many Potter experts believe that this neighbourhood was the inspiration J.K. Rowling may have used for Number 12 (map).  It also looks very similar from the actual filming location used for Grimmauld Place - Claremont Square.
